Benefits-based Accountability

Bennington-Rutland Supervisory Union is committed to the success of every one of our amazing students.  Decisions made in our school system are based on our supervisory union motto, “All Our Kids Are All Our Kids.” Operational decisions are guided by our district’s ends policies, goals, and our expectation that every child is transition-ready for high school.

Our supervisory union and districts are fortunate to have incredible support that we value and embrace the belief that our organization is accountable to our community, ensuring we educate all students so they become self-fulfilled people and active, civic-minded citizens of the world.  It is with this important concept in mind, that we are implementing the Benefits-based Accountability Model to make sure our community is educated on all aspects of our work and the goals, success, and areas of need that truly define our school system.

In this section of the website, we take a closer look at our Benefits-based Accountability System.

Bennington-Rutland Supervisory Union and member districts use accountability measurements to give the community feedback on how well we are doing as an educational institution. As a supervisory union, because we emphasize a while-child approach to learning, we prioritize moving beyond the traditional accountability model that only emphasizes state-mandated benchmarks.  The Benefits-based Accountability Model will not replace the Annual Snapshot or VTCAP testing data and BRSU will continue to value those results for growth opportunities, however, we believe that no school system or school can be measured by an annual standardized assessment given to students during one time period.  Rather, a holistic review of the work of the supervisory union that is grounded in forward-facing progress versus annual summative reviews is more informative in our mission to educate the whole child.

Accountability Engine

The accountability engine utilizes a process that identifies key areas for measurement/accountability to drive meaningful progress in the supervisory union and ensure that we are where we want to be concerning meeting our end policies for our students, staff and our community. Pillar Teams made up of stakeholders will review evidence trimesterly and make judgments “signaling” the current success of key questions based on evidence.

How does BRSU's Benefits-based Accountability Model work?

We have committed to seven foundational pillars that the schools will use to support our students, allowing each to pursue their hopes and dreams for their futures. The seven core pillars of Benefits-based Accountability align with our districts' end policies and our desire for operational efficiencies:

Pillars aligned to Districts' Ends policies:

  • Student Learning

  • Student Readiness

  • Engaged, Well-Rounded Students

  • Safety/Well-Being

Pillars aligned to Operational Efficiency efforts:

  • Community Engagement/Partnerships

  • Professional Learning/Quality Staff

  • Fiscal/Operations Systems
